Raising Riders: Notes From The Pony Programme

Most of our youngest guests arrive nervous of horses. Most leave asking when they can come back.

The pony programme began almost by accident, with a couple of quiet ponies and a few children who would not leave the stable yard. Today it runs every afternoon of the school holidays, and it is one of the parts of a stay that guests mention most when they write to us afterwards.

We start on the ground: grooming, leading, learning how a horse says it is happy or unsure. Only then do we get into the saddle. By the end of a week, most children are riding a short loop of the arena on their own, and a few are already asking about the trails.

Lessons are for children from five years old, with a helmet and an instructor alongside at all times.
